The Benefits of Reflexology: The Secrets of Ancient Healing Art


What is Reflexology?


Reflexology is a complementary therapy that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears to promote healing and relaxation throughout the body. The underlying principle of reflexology is based on the concept that these areas, known as reflex points, correspond to different organs, glands, and systems within the body. This article will deal solely (no pun intended) with the feet.


What happens during a reflexology treatment?


During a reflexology session, a trained practitioner uses their fingers and thumbs to apply pressure to these reflex points, with the goal of stimulating the body's natural healing mechanisms and restoring balance to the corresponding areas of the body. Reflexology is often used to address a variety of physical and emotional issues, including stress, pain, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, and more.


Sometimes a practitioner will work the whole of one foot and the whole of the other foot, my preference is to move from foot to foot and work with the body’s systems rather than the ‘foot’. I find this a much more holistic way of working, but we are all different and there is no right or wrong way, just the way that works for you.


Often reflexologists will use a chair which leans back and allows them easy access to the feet, but it may be that your practitioner uses a massage couch. Both are comfortable and allow you to relax while the feet are gently being worked feet. Many clients like reflexology because they don’t have to remove many clothes and they don’t have to move after getting settled!


While reflexology is generally considered safe and non-invasive, it's essential to consult with a qualified practitioner, particularly if you have any underlying health conditions or concerns. Reflexology can be used alone or in conjunction with other therapeutic modalities as part of a holistic approach to health and well-being.


How can reflexology help me?


I often get asked this question? What is prodding my feet going to do? Or what is toe twiddling as my dear Gramp used to ask? Before I trained in reflexology, I thought exactly the same and I was amazed when I found out how much the feet can tell us. Even before we touch the feet, we can tell lots of different things from how much energy you have or whether you are an outgoing person. If you have been wearing socks we can tell if there are areas of congestion in the body.


However, it is when we get our hands on the feet that they begin to tell a story, their story. Each reflex point has a corresponding area in the body and by apply gentle pressure to these points helps us to balance and restore this area to a state of homeostasis or balance.

A while ago I had a young mother come and see me for reflexology, she was an avid runner but something did not feel right after a training session. I was intrigued to see if reflexology could offer any insight. I started with the treatment, firstly warming the feet and then systematically working through the systems of the body. It was when I reached the hip reflex point that I found there was an issue, a hip imbalance which she could feel too.


Another time I had a young lad who arrived with hay-fever symptoms and feeling miserable because of it. I chose to use a bit of tiger balm with this one on the toes where the sinus reflexes are. Within about half an hour he was feeling much better and asking what was for lunch, always a good sign!


Reflexology is not a cure for something and for something like hay-fever I would suggest a few sessions while the relevant pollen is high for you. Reflexology is an accumulative treatment meaning that the more you have the more you will see a reduction in the symptoms. Your reflexologist may also give you some areas to work on at home either on the foot or the hand.


How will I feel after reflexology?


After a reflexology session, many people report feeling deeply relaxed and rejuvenated. The gentle pressure may have helped to release tension, improve circulation, and promote overall well-being. People often describe sensations of calmness, reduced stress, and a sense of balance and harmony after a reflexology treatment. Some may also experience increased energy levels or improved sleep quality. Overall, the effects can vary from person to person, but many find it to be a deeply soothing and therapeutic experience.
